What Exactly Is Positive Reinforcement?

Positive reinforcement is a scientifically proven training method that focuses on rewarding desired behaviors to encourage their repetition. Rather than punishing what a dog does wrong, this method builds confidence by clearly showing the dog what they’re doing right—and reinforcing it.

Positive reinforcement mirrors how we, as humans, learn best. For example, a child who earns praise or a gold star for completing homework is more likely to continue putting in effort. Dogs respond similarly—but their version of a “gold star” might be a piece of chicken, a squeaky toy, or a quick game of tug.

With consistent use, positive reinforcement teaches your dog to make good choices because those choices lead to something they love. Over time, you’ll find that your dog offers the desired behavior willingly—even before you ask—because they’ve learned it consistently results in a positive outcome.

This approach not only helps teach commands and manners—it strengthens your bond and builds a trusting, respectful relationship between you and your dog.
